Corporate and Social Responsibility

Exploration work

African Eagle’s staff and management are aware that its exploration activities impact the communities and environment in which it operates. Wherever possible the Company seeks to make this impact a positive one and is committed to being a good corporate citizen, to be considerate to its neighbours, and to help sustain the communities and environment in which it operates.

Our CSR Policy

  • Be a good corporate citizen;
  • Think how our operations can be made to benefit our host communities;
  • Wherever possible obtain supplies and workforce locally;
  • Invest in the training and development of our employees;
  • Try to do better than best practice in environmental and safety issues; and
  • When supporting good causes, target communities local to our main operations; provide tangible help in the provision of goods and services rather than cash; ensure that our contribution is lasting and can be developed further; ensure that any intermediaries have a record of success; and always monitor the results.

Communities

African Eagle believes that it can make the greatest impact by engaging with the communities in which it operates; by creating jobs, procuring supplies and services, and training and empowering our workers. This type of involvement has a far greater impact than simply supporting good causes.

Nonetheless, African Eagle has supported local initiatives in education, health and combating disadvantage. We have assisted with the building of classrooms and the provision of school uniforms, desks, text books and sports equipment. African Eagle recently installed a new water pump for Dutwa village and has also provided emergency patient transport to local hospitals on several occasions and iron sheets for village community projects in both Ngasamo and Dutwa Wards.

We continue to support a local Tanzanian orphanage with manpower and supplies including a water filter system that was donated to the Forever Angels Baby Orphanage in Mwanza, The Company's forest stewardship scheme at Miyabi continues and African Eagle assisted with various construction projects in their grounds, which is ongoing. Villages around the Dutwa area continue to receive African Eagle's assistance including the donation of new roofs for office buildings.

A Masters student in public health for the research of the effect of Mercury and arsenic poisoning of artisanal miners was sponsored by the Company and a number of local charities, which support children through schooling and assist families living with HIV/AIDS have received donations.

Environment

African Eagle follows best international practice to ensure that all of its projects cause the minimum environmental impact, as well as complying with all local regulations and legislation.

Environmental impact reports are commissioned on all the Company’s projects before it starts exploration activities. At the Dutwa project we are currently in the process of commissioning an ESIA. Also in Tanzania, we continue to work with local interests to ensure the protection of a 300 hectare wooded nature reserve within the Miyabi project area.

Employment

The employment, education and training of our locally recruited staff forms a vital part of our CSR programme. More than 90% of the employees at our African operations have been recruited locally.

We provide financial support to employees to study for professional and postgraduate qualifications. With this support, one of our senior Tanzanian geologists has been supported to study for a Masters degree at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. We encourage all our staff to attend training courses and conferences to further their knowledge and experience. We have several senior employees today who started with African Eagle as casual labourers and now have sound technical skills and a more assured future.

African Eagle has a low staff turnover rate, due to our commitment to training, our fair and equitable remuneration policy, and our policy of delegating responsibility. Our salaries are competitive and most of the locally recruited staff are included in the Group share option plan.

The health and safety of our staff is very important to us and health and safety guidelines, based on formal risk assessments, are implemented at all our overseas operations. Safe working practices are documented, covering areas such as safety at drilling sites, treatment and prevention of malaria, use of vehicles and hazardous chemicals. Staff receive health and safety training at regular intervals.
