African Eagle's staff and management know that our operations will affect the communities and environments in which we operate and we seek always to make our impact a positive one. We are committed to be a good neighbour, to be considerate, to help sustain the communities among which we work and to respect the environments in which we operate.
African Eagle believes that it can make the greatest positive impact by engaging with the communities in which we operate; by creating jobs, procuring supplies and services, and training and empowering our workers. In our experience, this type of involvement has a greater positive impact than simply supporting good causes.
None the less, African Eagle has supported local initiatives in education, health and combating disadvantage. We have assisted with the building of classrooms and the provision of school uniforms, school equipment, text books and sports equipment. At Mkushi in Zambia, African Eagle and its partner CGA Mining substantially refurbished and re-equipped the Mkushi Mine Health Post, a clinic on which a population of 9,000 people depend. In Tanzania, we continue to support Upendo Daima, a Street Children's Centre close to Mwanza. We have also contributed to a number of local charities which support children through school and assist families living with HIV/AIDS.
African Eagle follows best international practice to ensure that all of its projects cause the minimum environmental impact, as well as complying with all local regulations and legislation.
We commission formal environmental impact reports on all our operations, including sampling, airborne surveys and drilling. At Mkushi, impact reports on the mine itself and likely powerline routes form part of the feasibility study. As Mkushi is a brownfield site, we aim to leave the area in better condition than we found it.
In Tanzania, we continue to work with local interests to ensure the protection of a 300 hectare wooded nature reserve within the Miyabi project area.
The employment, education and training of our locally recruited staff forms a vital part of our CSR programme. More than 90% of the employees at our African operations have been recruited locally.
We provide financial support to employees to study for professional and postgraduate qualifications. With this support, two of our employees have been awarded Masters Degree in Geology at the prestigious Rhodes University. We encourage all our staff to attend training courses and conferences to further their knowledge and experience. We have several senior employees today who started with African Eagle as casual labourers and now have sound technical skills and a more assured future.
African Eagle has a low staff turnover rate, due in part to our commitment to training, our fair and equitable remuneration policy, and our policy of delegating responsibility. Our salaries are competitive and most of our locally recruited staff are included in the Group share option plan.
The health and safety of our staff is very important to us and health and safety guidelines, based on formal risk assessments, are implemented at all our overseas operations. Safe working practices are documented, covering areas such as safety at drilling sites, treatment and prevention of malaria, use of vehicles and hazardous chemicals. Staff receive health and safety training at regular intervals.
