Projects > Projects Overview > Zambia > Mokambo
The Mokambo Project is situated in the Zambian Copperbelt, 90km northeast of Ndola, and forms a narrow strip of 25km2 running along the border between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
African Eagle (AFE) has a 50% interest in the project and is the project manager and operator.
Much of the project is underlain by the highly prospective Lower Roan geological sequences which host most of the world class copper deposits in central Africa.
The Project lies on the eastern limb of the Mufulira syncline, the western limb contains the world class Mufulira copper deposit which has been in operation since 1933 and by 2000 had produced 9Mt of copper.
Past exploration at Mokambo indicated non-JORC deposits of 6Mt at 2.4% copper in the South zone and 3.8Mt at 1.7% copper in the North zone.
The area was investigated by drilling during the 1950s by a Mufulira based team and more recently by a Romanian Company, Geomin, in the 1970s. Geomin’s (non-JORC) global resource estimate was 41Mt grading 1.72% copper.
Since 1950, 22 diamond drill holes have been sunk in the Mokambo South zone. Copper mineralisation over a strike length of at least 1km was intersected down to 1400m. Based on the results reported from these drill holes, the average grade is 2.4% copper over an average thickness of 4.6m indicating a deposit of 6Mt. Very little drilling was undertaken in the south of the area despite outcropping Lower Roan strata.
The Mokambo North zone was estimated to contain at least 3.8Mt @ 1.7% copper. These unclassified historical resources refer only to sulphide mineralization as oxide mineralisation was of little interest at that time.
In November 2007, AFE and its Zambian operating subsidiary, Katanga Resources, signed a Heads of Agreement with Copperbelt Minerals Ltd and its operating subsidiary, Platmin Congo, to jointly explore and develop the Mokambo project. Platmin Congo holds a prospecting licence over the northern zone and Katanga resources over the southern zone. A 50% participating interest is held by each Company and AFE are project managers and operators.
AFE has been conducting a phase 1 exploration programme on the Project. Geochemical soil sampling and geological mapping has been completed at Mokambo South and the coverage has now been extended to Mokambo North. The mapping has shown that Lower Roan rocks are well exposed in the project forming a 30m high ridge, which can be traced for approximately 12km along strike.
Drilling has started on a programme of 11 exploratory diamond drill holes, spaced at approximately 1km intervals, to test the continuity of the mineralisation along strike and to establish the stratigraphic succession. Based on results of this initial exploration programme, resource definition drilling will commence in mid 2008.
