Projects > Projects Overview > Tanzania > Rupa
The Rupa Project lies in the Musoma Goldfield, situated within the Lake Victoria Goldfields (LVGF) and hosts eight gold mines, past and present. These include Kiabakiri Gold Mine, which produced 290,000oz of gold and lies just 10kms to the north of Kiwasi, and Buhemba Gold Mine which lies to the east. Drilling by Iscor in 1996 97 returned intersections up to 16m at 6.33g/t gold. African Eagle (AFE) has completed extensive geochemical and geophysical surveys which have returned multiple targets with values up to 245ppb gold in soil.
Three licences cover a combined area of 68.66km² with AFE holding a 90% stake in two licences and 100% in the remaining one.
The northern part of the Rupa project area is underlain by Nyanzian greenstones and the southern part by later granites. In the north east corner, the mineralised Suguti Shear Zone transects the greenstones along a northwest trend. Felsic volcanics crop out on the southwest flank of the project area.
The greenstone terrain in the north of the project area hosts two sets of historical gold workings, at Karusenye and Nyamweke/Chirorwe, while a third set lies at Seke to the west. There are also numerous artisanal gold workings scattered around the project.
Gold mineralisation is associated with a series of east trending quartz veins which are developed in or adjacent to shear zones on the contact of the granite and greenstone. In the northwest of the project area a late stage granitic intrusion has been identified which yielded anomalous gold in soil values along its contact with the greenstone.
AFE has compiled historical survey data and completed reconnaissance and infill geochemical surveys over the whole of the northern and western portions of the project area, revealing multiple gold targets with values up to 245ppb (shown opposite). A detailed ground magnetic survey has shown numerous structures with potential to host mineralisation.
Previous exploration, including trenching, rock chip sampling and drilling, completed by Iscor in 1996- 97 returned encouraging results 16m at 6.33g/t Gold, 6m at 5.97 g/t Gold and 13m at 2.69 g/t Gold.
AFE will complete further infill soil sampling and detailed ground magnetics, complemented by detailed geological mapping. The Company expects to commence an initial drill programme in 2008.
